One provision of a regulatory reform bill signed into law by Gov. Pat McCrory on Oct. 22 exempts volunteer officers of nonprofit corporations from mandatory workers' compensation coverage, the North Carolina Rate Bureau said in a reminder posted on its website this week.
House Bill 765 changes the definition of "employee" in the Workers' Compensation Act to exempt executive officers, directors and committee members of nonprofit organizations, provided that they perform only voluntary service and receive no remuneration other than reasonable reimbursement for expenses.
