Commission Can't Retroactively Correct Miscalculation of Peace Officer's Award

The Maryland Court of Special Appeals last week ruled that the state Workers' Compensation Commission lacked authority to retroactively fix a miscalculation of benefits for a public safety officer, even though the employer conceded the mistake. Many states provide for high levels of compensation for injured peace officers and other emergency responders.  In California, for instance, injured police officers and firefighters can receive a continuation of their salary for one year instead of temporary total disability benefits.
