The namesake for legislation that created a cancer presumption for firefighters will be laid to rest Saturday in Chardon.
Michael L. Palumbo Jr., a Beachwood fire captain who inspired Senate Bill 27 and its provisions of compensating firefighters for certain cancers, died May 24 following a two-year bout with aggressive brain cancer.
“He wasn’t chosen to have his name on the bill because he had this occupational cancer, Michael was chosen for this bill because of his commitment to community” and the fire service for 25 years, childhood friend and firefighter Bill Mastrioanni told the NBC affiliate in Columbus.
Visitation will be today from 1-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. at Monreal Funeral Home, 35400 Curtis Blvd. in Eastlake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, 37932 Euclid Ave., in Willoughby. Burial will follow at All Souls Cemetery, 10366 Chardon Road in Chardon.
