After hiring a first-responder liaison, as directed by state lawmakers, the Texas Office of Injured Employee Counsel is taking the show on the road.

The office said in a press release Thursday that it is giving presentations about the workers’ compensation system, and can specifically tailor its message and the length of the presentation to fit police, firefighters or emergency medical service workers.

The office hired Yolanda Garcia as first-responder liaison last October and stationed her in Lubbock, which happens to be the home town of the lawmaker who created her job. Garcia’s position was mandated by House Bill 2082, introduced by Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock.

The OIEC said Garcia has been busy assisting first responders in navigating the comp system. In the press release, it pointed to a report by Southern Texas television station about a Rio Grande Valley firefighter who fought the city of Mission before being awarded benefits for kidney cancer.

To schedule a presentation, contact the office by emailing FirstResponderHelp@oiec.texas.gov or calling 512-804-4173.
