A New Jersey tire shop employee filed a complaint with the federal workplace safety agency this spring alleging a water leak in the basement, leading to an inspection that yielded $103,331 in penalties.
Federal safety inspectors corroborated the worker's complaint, finding water was leaking into the basement of Mavis Discount Tires, of Westfield. Inspectors also found, as they had during a 2015 visit, obstructed exit routes.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also cited Mavis Tires for improperly storing compressed gas cylinders and failing to:
Display exit signs.
