The Texas AFL-CIO marked the second anniversary of the BP refinery explosion in Texas City by calling for a state occupational safety and health administration to encourage better safety practices at Texas oil refineries.
Labor officials joined with relatives of victims of the March 23, 2005, disaster at a ceremony at the State Capitol commemorating the event.
The explosion killed 15 workers and injured 180.
Eva Rowe, whose parents died in the explosion, was the featured speaker at the ceremony. She asked attendees to pause for 15 seconds of silence to commemorate the 15 victims.
