Seaman Gets $5.1M in Jones Act Case vs. Exxon

The Associated Press reported yesterday that a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded $5.1 million to a former merchant marine, against Exxon Mobil Corp., as compensation for bladder and prostate cancer he claimed was the product of toxic fumes emitted by crude oil on the ships he worked. After two weeks of testimony Jurors reached a decision in two days of deliberations. They ordered Exxon to pay 54-year-old Dwayne Gregory $1.3 million for loss of earnings and medical expenses and $3.8 million for pain and suffering.
