R.I. Uninsured May Face Felony Charges

Rhode Island employers who fail to carry workers' compensation insurance may now face felony charges, including up to two years in prison and $10,000. SB 626 was approved by the House Labor Committee on Wednesday, and will now face a full vote. The bill came from the Senate, which approved the measure on June 19. The measure, introduced February 13, was no doubt in response to The Station Nightclub disaster, where the Derderian brothers, owners of the nightclub, claimed ignorance of the State's mandatory WC coverage.
