Last year the City of Oakland paid out $18 million in workers' compensation benefits, and one claimant has been getting benefits since 1942. Work comp is on the radar screen for the city as it deals with a projected budget deficit of $20 million to $30 million.
The city presently has 1,571 open workers' compensation claims, resulting in nearly 14,000 collective days of missed work last year.
