California Gov. Gray Davis, D-Calif., vetoed yesterday SB 147, which would have prevented employers in many situations from reading and monitoring their employees' e-mail.
The bill had passed to the Governor's desk from the California State Assembly on Aug. 30 in a 43-22 vote.
Davis vetoed the bill under the rationale that while he supports employees' rights to privacy, he is not interested in putting a regulatory burden on businesses.
SB 147 was sponsored by Sen. Debra Bowen (D-Redondo Beach), and would have extended office telephone protections to e-mail.
