The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) placed a series of links to safety and regulatory information regarding mining safety and "retreat mining" on its Web site last week, despite denials from the owner of a Huntington, Utah, coal mine that his company was engaged in the practice when the mine collapsed and trapped six miners.
NIOSH has outlined technologies for safe retreat mining, an operation in which miners pull out the last standing pillars of coal in an area and let the roof collapse.
