The courier industry in several states is under the spotlight for the way that it classifies drivers as independent contractors, and nowhere is the glare on its labor practice any brighter than in California.
The California Employment Development Department has audited 225 courier companies since 2003 and determined that 153 of them had misclassified couriers as independent contractors instead of regular employees, said spokesman Kevin Collari.
