The American Chronic Pain Association says medications can be helpful but are not universally effective without cognitive, behavioral, or physical reactivation treatments, in an update to Medication & Chronic Pain Supplement released this month.
The 46-page document, available online, serves as a primer on the various kinds of pain medications and their side effects. It is written in laymen's language.
