The United Labor Legislative Committee endorsed legislation calling for the creation of a Texas occupational safety and health agency.
House Bill 2763 by Rep. Craig Eiland, D-Galveston, would establish a state OSHA operation, which supporters say would bring better safety regulation to the petrochemical industry.
In announcing the committee's action, the Texas AFL-CIO commented that the 2005 explosion at the BP refinery in Texas City is "yet another illustration that federal health and safety regulation simply does not arrive until disaster has struck."
