Ohio's two largest coal mines have injury rates about 25% higher than the national average, according to a report published Sunday by the Columbus Dispatch.
The newspaper said the mines, owned by Ohio "coal king" Robert E. Murray, were cited for serious violations by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Murray Energy owns the American Energy Corp.'s Century Mine in Monroe County and the Ohio Valley Coal Co Powhatan No. 6 Mine in Belmont County, which is 700 feet deep and stretches for miles.
The Century Mine ranked 11th and the Powhatan Mine 19th in the United State...
