AUSTIN -- Workplace fatalities in Texas dropped to 440 in 2004, down 10% from 2003, the Texas Workers Compensation Commission (TWCC) reported Friday (Aug. 26), but a spokesman for the Texas AFL-CIO isn't sure the numbers accurately reflect the number of workplace deaths in the state.
The 2004 total was the second lowest since TWCC and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics began collecting data on Texas workplace deaths and injuries in 1990.
Nationwide, there were 5,703 fatalities in 2004, an increase of 2% from the revised total of 5,575 fatal workplace injuries reported in 2003.
