California state Assemblyman Tom Daly is proposing legislation to require workers’ compensation coverage for law enforcement officials who are injured while responding to out-of-state crimes, according to a report by the Orange County Register.

Daly, a Democrat from Anaheim, is proposing the statutory change to eliminate any ambiguity in current statutes that Orange County cited in denying claims filed by four deputies who say they were injured in the Oct. 1 shooting in Las Vegas, the Register reports.

“California law and standard departmental policy require sworn peace officers to respond 24/7 when events occur in their presence,” Daly’s office said in a statement to the Register. “These four brave officers did not hesitate in laying their lives on the line to save others when the shooter began taking aim at innocent people.”

The Register reports that more than 200 California police officers were at the concert that was targeted in the attack, including some who say they were shot or have developed post-traumatic stress disorder as a result.

Labor Code Section 3600.2 provides workers’ compensation coverage for law enforcement officials performing official duties anywhere in California, but the statute is silent about injuries occurring outside the state.
