UPS Faces $431,517 Penalty for Safety Violations

Tuesday, December 17, 2019 | 0

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined United Parcel Service Inc. $431,517 for allegedly exposing workers to fire and other hazards at a shipping and delivery facility in Massachusetts.

UPS is challenging the findings before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

OSHA said its investigators found several violations at the UPS facility in Vineyard Haven that affected the ability of employers to safely evacuate in the event of a fire. UPS was cited for obstructed and inadequate exit routes, lack of exit signage, failure to update an emergency action plan, poor housekeeping, lack of stair rails and improper use of electrical cords.

“The hazardous conditions at this UPS facility can impede a worker’s ability to promptly exit in an emergency, placing them at risk for serious or fatal injuries,” James Mulligan, OSHA’s Braintree area director, said in a statement.
