The United Farm Workers claims that the heat-related death of a 59-year-old field worker in California’s Central Valley illustrates a problem with workplace safety regulations intended to protect employees from the dangers of high temperatures.
Elidio Hernandez Gomez, 59, died Aug. 8 while picking tomatillos on a farm in Fresno. According to media reports, it was about 100 degrees that day and Hernandez reportedly complained to a supervisor that he was feeling ill but didn’t receive any assistance.
