Ricardo Lara, a Democrat who now is a member of the state Senate, narrowly defeated former independent Steve Poizner in the race for commissioner of insurance.
Lara on Tuesday received 50.8% of the vote to Poizner’s 49.2%, according to the secretary of state’s office.
Lara will replace Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, who is termed out of office.
Poizner served a single term as insurance commissioner from 2007 to 2011. In 2019, he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the governor’s seat. He is now registered with no party preference.
