With only a week left in the session, it would appear that a heavily lobbied bill that would establish a cancer presumption to firefighters and grant mental health benefits to first responders who witness a death might not pass through the House, as feared.
The two issues were originally addressed in separate bills until they merged to become Senate Bill 593. That bill passed the Senate last week and moved to the House, which was worrisome for some Democrats, like House Speaker J. Brendan Sharkey, D-Hamden.
