Ammonia Release Prompts Safety Citations for Ice Company

Hawaiian Ice Co. in Honolulu is facing $107,800 in penalties after an incident in which 3,900 pounds of anhydrous ammonia was released, requiring evacuations and medical treatment of workers. The Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Division issued 14 citations on Oct. 17 to Jems Enterprises LLC doing business as Hawaiian Ice Co. According to the citations, employees were identifying and repairing ammonia leaks when the release occurred.
