Nevada and New Jersey are poised to become the ninth and 10th states to require doctors to check prescription drug-monitoring databases before prescribing opioids and other controlled substances – a move that some states have reported as being associated with fewer opioid prescriptions and reduced overdose rates.
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed Senate Bill 459 into law on Tuesday. As of Oct. 1, prescribers in the state will have to check the PDMP before prescribing to a new patient any controlled substance in the Drug Enforcement Administration's Schedules I, II or III.
