Volunteer Firefighter Gets Additional Healing Period Benefits, but Not Penalties

The Iowa Court of Appeals upheld an award of healing period benefits to an injured volunteer firefighter, as well as the denial of his request for penalties. Case: City of Maxwell v. Marshall, No. 20-0916, 10/20/2021, published. Facts: Dennis Marshall was a volunteer firefighter for the City of Maxwell. In December 2013, he slipped on ice and injured his back while responding to an emergency call. Doctors determined Marshall had a disc herniation, and he underwent three surgeries.
