City Can't Cut off Health Insurance Benefits for injured Police Officer

The 5th District of the Illinois Appellate Court ruled that the City of Carbondale couldn't terminate the health insurance coverage for a police officer who quit working after he banged his head on the door frame of his patrol car. Under Illinois law, a municipal employer is obligated to pay the entire health insurance premium for any police officer or firefighter, and his spouse and dependent children, if he suffers a "catastrophic injury" that leaves him permanently disabled from returning to duty.
