Sheriff's Deputy Charged With Fraud

Wednesday, September 20, 2017 | 0

A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy is accused of misrepresenting the extent of his injuries to obtain $57,000 in workers’ compensation benefits that he was not entitled to receive, according to multiple media outlets.

The San Diego NBC affiliate reports that Michael Tobolsky, 40, faces charges including insurance fraud, filing a false claim, attempted perjury and failure to disclose information relevant to his January 2017 workers’ compensation claim. Tobolsky reportedly injured his back lifting 5-gallon water bottles.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Tobolsky told medical professionals that he had debilitating pain and was unable to do light duty work. But an investigation allegedly turned up evidence of him working out at a gym.

The Union-Tribute says Tobolsky denied the allegations.

“I can tell you that all these charges are 100% false,” he is quoted as saying. “Other than that, I don’t think it would be a good idea to make any other comments.”

Tobolsky is scheduled to be arraigned today in San Diego Superior Court.
