A collective investigation brought on by the U.S. Department of Labor along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah found that 16 companies avoided paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes by misclassifying employees as independent contractors.
The companies, operating as CSG Workforce Partners, Universal Contracting, LLC and Arizona Tract/Arizona CLA, had required home construction workers to become members of limited liability companies, which ultimately stripped them of state and federal protections as employees, according to the Labor Department.
