Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas last week ordered a "phased shutdown" of a state office building in Bennington where six workers have been diagnosed with a rare lung disease, according to press reports.
The governor acted after state senators introduced a bill that would make workers eligible for workers' compensation benefits if they had worked in the building for six months. The bill would order the building closed until tests show that it is free of airborne pathogens, particulates, mold and other contaminants.
