Japan High Court Upholds Repeal in Toyota Suicide

Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Chikara Sakaguchi announced that the Labor Ministry will not appeal the Nagoya High Court ruling on July 8 upholding a lower court's repeal of the Ministry's decision not to pay workers' comp benefits to the wife of a Toyota Motor Corp. employee who committed suicide in 1988. The 35 year-old automobile designer jumped to his death in August 1988 as a result of ongoing depression brought on by excessive overtime and workload.
