Union Carbide was found liable Thursday by a jury for exposing West Virginia workers to asbestos over the course of 35 years.
The plaintiffs' lawyer, Scott Segal, says that the verdict will permit another 2,000 plaintiffs to pursue their case against the company as liability will no longer be a required element in suits, only injury or illness, and damages. The jury found Union Carbide maintained unsafe work conditions from 1945 to 1980 and was therefore liable for "unreasonable dangerous premises due to the presence of breathable asbestos fibers."
