Bill Would Hold Amish to Same WC Coverage Rules

Amish-run businesses in Michigan may eschew modern conveniences, but they would soon have to post up-to-date signs showing that they carry workers' compensation insurance, if one state lawmaker has his way.

Rep. Scott Dianda

State Rep. Scott Dianda, D-Calumet, introduced HB 5698 this week, which would require all businesses subject to workers' compensation laws to post signs in conspicuous spots, notifying all that they have the required workers' comp coverage for employees, Dianda's office said.

The bill has 56 cosponsors.

Michigan is known for its Amish furniture-makers and wood shops. But state regulatory inspectors have recently had issues with the family-run shops and sawmills, Diandra said, partly because they may feel that they are not required to follow the same rules as other Michigan businesses.

“I’m concerned that certain smaller wood shops and light industrial businesses aren’t following all the rules to protect their workers,” Dianda said in a news release. “I hope that by requiring everyone to post proof that they have workers’ comp insurance, this will remind them that they must follow safety rules. If they fail to post the notice, that will flag the business for the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs inspectors so that they can work with them on following all safety rules.”

The legislative session started Jan. 10 and runs off and on for most of the year.
