Although California dropped out of the top spot in a biennial comparison of the cost of workers’ compensation coverage throughout the county, its short fall to the second place didn’t come as a complete surprise.
While the reforms of Senate Bill 863, together with subsequent legislation targeting fraud in California’s workers’ compensation system, have helped drive down the cost of coverage, observers said persistent issues such as a high rate of permanent disability claims and longer than average claim duration continue to put upward pressure on costs.
