At least 12 employees of Illinois' Department of Children and Family Services have been attacked or seriously threatened as they entered homes since 2013, a Chicago Tribune records analysis found.
The Tribune performed its analysis by reviewing workers' compensation records and police reports, and interviewing DCFS officials.
In 2013, a worker needed weeks off after a beating left her with an eye injury that still affects her.
In 2014, one worker needed two months off after she was beaten up by the mother of a child she was attempting to take into protective custody.
WI - OSHA Proposes $1.8M Fine for Corn Mill Where Explosion Killed 5 Workers

A Wisconsin corn milling facility is facing proposed fines of $1.84 million after a grain dust explosion killed five workers and injured 12 others, according to the U.S Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Didion Milling Inc. in Cambria has also been placed in OSHA’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program. OSHA on Friday issued citations to the facility for 14 willful and five serious violations, most involving fire and explosion hazards.

CA - Cal-OSHA Cites Six Employers for Exposing Workers to Valley Fever

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health fined six employers a total of $241,950 for exposing workers to valley fever at a solar project construction site in Monterey County.
The agency, commonly referred to as Cal-OSHA, said a general contractor and five subcontractors at the California Flats Solar Project in Cholame Hills failed to provide appropriate respiratory protection to workers.

NY - Injured Worker Caught Playing Hockey Pleads Guilty to Insurance Fraud

An injured worker who played with an amateur hockey team while saying he was too injured to work has pleaded guilty to insurance fraud, the Rome Sentinel reports.
Samuel Spina, 45, of Rome, pleaded guilty to fifth-degree insurance fraud before Judge Gregory J. Amoroso in Rome City Court on Nov. 8. His sentencing is set for Dec. 11.
Spina, an aide at the Taberg Residential Center for Girls youth detention center, reported a serious knee injury at work in September 2015.
Two weeks after the reported injury, investigators say Spina was observed playing goalie in games for the Tighty Whit.
NM - WCA Not Holding Expedited Lump Sum Hearing Thanksgiving Week

The New Mexico Workers’ Compensation Administration said it will not be holding expedited lump sum hearings Tuesday because of the short holiday week for Thanksgiving.
The WCA designates an on-call pro tempore judge to hear stipulated requests for lump sum settlements most Tuesdays, but said it will not offer that service during the holiday week.
Information on the WCA website about “Lump Sum Tuesday” says the walk-in hearings to get approval for settlements will not be held during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weeks, either.
