Washington state's workplace safety agency has fined Safeway more than $26,000 for alleged warehouse quota law violations, the first sanctions imposed under a 2024 law.
The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries says a Safeway distribution center south of Seattle closely monitors its workers' bathroom, meal breaks and other activities and imposes strict and inconsistent production quotas. A state law that took effect last year protects workers' rights and well-being so that quotas don't result in safety compromises.
