Doctors would be urged to proceed with caution when prescribing opioids exceeding the daily equivalent of 80 mg of morphine under controlled substance-prescribing guidelines on which the California Medical Board will vote on Friday.
The 80 mg per day morphine equivalent dosage, or MED, is described as a "yellow flag" warning in the latest draft of the board's guidelines. In June, the board's draft proposed a 200 mg per day MED as a threshold.
