Former professional athletes covered by the National Football League's settlement of a massive head injury class action will be able to register for benefits starting next week.
The $1 billion settlement provides medical examinations and monetary awards for those diagnosed with brain injuries.
U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody approved of the deal in 2015, although a group of athletes protested that the terms of the settlement wouldn't provide adequate recompense to all of the members of the class of more than 5,000 former players.
