Federal workplace safety regulators fined a general contractor in Maine $161,325 saying it ignored repeated warnings and its own site-specific safety plan prior to a fatal accident in June 2024 that killed the brother of the company's owner.
The Bangor Daily News reports Stephen Lane, 67, died June 25 when an unbraced retaining wall collapsed at a worksite in Brownville.
The newspaper reports Clifford Lane, Stephen's brother and owner of Patriot Paving Group, was operating an excavator that destabilized soil and caused a 40- to 60-foot-long section of the retaining wall to collapse.
