The Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services reported that it received notice of 42 fatalities accepted for workers’ compensation benefits in 2023.
The 42 compensable workplace fatalities represent a 40% increase compared to the 30 compensable workplace deaths in 2022.
Sixteen of the accepted fatalities, about 38%, involved roadway accidents. Since 2019, carriers have accepted liability for 48 fatalities involving roadway accidents, about a quarter of the 191 compensable fatalities reported since 2019.
