Manufacturer Fined $116,270 After Hand Mangling

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is proposing $116,270 in fines against a Florida manufacturer for safety violations after an employee with only three days of experience suffered a badly mangled hand because the company had failed to prevent machinery from starting up during servicing. OSHA said the 30-year-old employee tried to clear a jam caused by mattress foam at the Southern Fiber Inc. plant in Miami Gardens when the machine started unexpectedly and removed all of the skin from his hand.
