An executive order issued by President Donald Trump has removed the hiring of federal administrative law judges from the competitive civil service, including those who hear claims by some injured workers.
While most of 1,900 or so federal ALJs work for the Social Security Administration, about 40 of them work for the Department of Labor and decide federal workers’ compensation cases, most involving the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act.
