Three U.S. senators, all Democrats, have introduced legislation that would create a presumption that federal wildfire workers who contract COVID-19 during fire season do so in the line of duty.
The bill, which has yet to be assigned a number, also would require wildland firefighters to be tested for the virus before starting work this season, Sen. Ron Wyden, of Oregon, said in a news release.
Wildfire workers may be more susceptible to lung damage from the disease, and the bill would help alleviate concerns among firefighters that their livelihoods could be lost, Wyden said.
