Washington lawmakers on Tuesday voted to send Gov. Jay Inslee a bill that would require wages for former inmates to be calculated based on what is paid to other employees doing similar work.
The state House of Representatives voted 61-34 to pass SB 5701, by Sen. Joe Nguyen, D-West Seattle. The Senate voted 37-12 to pass the measure Feb. 12.
Nguyen testified in January that inmates are typically paid low hourly wages. If they are injured before shortly after being released, those wages serve as the basis for determining indemnity benefits.
