Guilty Plea Entered in Federal Work Comp Fraud Scheme

Friday, April 1, 2016 | 0

The former head of the letter carriers' union in Tampa, who previously served time for a health care kickback scheme, pleaded guilty Tuesday to new federal charges related to a scheme to defraud the federal workers' compensation program, the Tampa Tribune reported.

Lenin Perez pleaded guilty to conspiracy and receiving illegal remunerations, each of which carry up to five years in prison, the newspaper said.

The charges involve a no-show job for his daughter, Liana Perez-Rodriguez, at AmeriMed Diagnostic Services. The company was owned by Lois Luis, a former medical clinic owner now serving time for staging a car crash in an insurance scam, the paper said.

Luis pleaded guilty Wednesday to conspiracy and paying an illegal remuneration, which also carries up to five years in jail for each count, the paper said.

Perez's daughter has pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about the no-show job at AmeriMed, the paper said.

Another defendant, Mary Manso, who was chief executive officer at the clinic, has pleaded guilty to obstructing a health care investigation and faces up to five years in federal prison, the paper said.
