After years of frustration over the Workers' Compensation Court failing to approve some lump-sum settlement agreements, Nebraska attorneys on both sides of the issue decided to take action. The result was LB953, which passed the legislature this spring and takes effect next week.
"We had a problem with the legal staff and the court being reluctant to approve settlements" if all medical bills were not paid in full, said Rod Rehm, a Lincoln-based claimants attorney who helped craft the legislation. "So, both sides thought it was good to get it straightened out."
