Gov. Greg Abbott this week signed two bills into law that could make it a little easier for some workers and their survivors to receive workers' compensation benefits.
House Bill 2503 ends what's been called the “remarriage penalty” for certain peace officers. Current law allows continued death benefits for spouses of some first responders, but not all. The new law extends the lifetime benefits to spouses of peace officers of state agencies, educational institutions and private junior colleges.
The law takes effect Sept. 1.
