The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday that the agency will soon dispense the first round of grants authorized by the 21st Century Cures Act to fight opioid addiction.
Passed in 2015, the act allowed HHS to earmark $485 million to help states and territories fund addiction prevention, treatment and recovery initiatives. The money will be divvied up based on states' overdose death rates and need for funding.
