The Washington state Senate approved a bill that would control how wages are calculated when someone is injured after incarceration.
The Senate on Friday voted 37-12 to pass SB 5701, by Sen. Joe Nguyen, D-West Seattle, which would require that wages for former inmates be calculated based on what is paid to other employees doing similar work.
During a committee hearing in January, Nguyen said inmates are typically paid low hourly wages. If they are injured before or after being released, those wages serve as the basis for determining the comp benefits they receive.
