Senate Passes Bill to Determine Inmate Wages

The Washington state Senate approved a bill that would control how wages are calculated when someone is injured after incarceration. The Senate on Friday voted 37-12 to pass SB 5701, by Sen. Joe Nguyen, D-West Seattle, which would require that wages for former inmates be calculated based on what is paid to other employees doing similar work. During a committee hearing in January, Nguyen said inmates are typically paid low hourly wages.
