The number of eligible applications for independent medical review increased to 148,106 in 2024 from 133,093 in 2023, and the proportion of decisions affirming the underlying utilization review determination fell to an all-time low of 87.3%, according to a new report by the California Division of Workers’ Compensation.
The 11.3% increase in eligible requests for administrative resolution of medical treatment disputes follows a 2.9% increase from 129,298 in 2022, the lowest number since the IMR program created by Senate Bill 863 was implemented.
