W.R. Berkley Corp. Reports $153M Net Income in 4th Quarter

The property and casualty insurance holding company W.R. Berkley Corp.'s net income increased 39% in the fourth quarter from this quarter last year, the company announced Tuesday. 

The company's net income was just less than $153 million in the fourth quarter of 2016, up from just less that $110 million in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The company wrote approximately the same amount of premiums in both quarters but earned more from investments in the fourth quarter of 2016. Investment income increased 24.8% between last year's fourth quarter and this year's. 

The sale of a portion of W.R. Berkley Corp.'s investment in HealthEquity Inc. resulted in a pre-tax gain of $68 million in the fourth quarter.
