In what may be a first in workers’ comp in Minnesota — and one of a only small number of cases outside of New Mexico — an insurance company has reportedly paid for an injured worker’s use of medical cannabis to treat muscle spasms and chronic pain. According to attorney Thomas Atkinson in Arden Hills, an independent medical exam found that medical marijuana was reasonable and necessary for his client, who was injured at work more than two decades ago and still has chronic pain and muscle spasms following two back surgeries.
